I personally would try Spybot Search and Destroy, lavasoft adaware, and maybe webroot spysweeper...

Well for anti virus protection it depends if you want to pay for it or not. I like Norton, some people say its not good but i think its one of the best out there.. except for the price..

i could suggest this anti virus software which has a firewall,it is made my Microsoft and you get a free 90 day trial which is good as 90 days is quiet a long time.

If you want to do a virus and spyware scan i could suggest this online scanner:

http://onecare.live.com/site/en-gb/default.htm

This is a free online virus scanner from Microsoft, once on the webpage i would suggest you click Full Service Scan, this scans your computer for viruses, spyware and cleans up your computer by clicking rid of things like temporary Internet files which can slow down your computer. The scan can take a long time if you have a lot of things installed on your computer.

If you want a good anti spyware program i would suggest Ad-Aware by Lavasoft. You can either download the free version or you can pay for a version which has extra features.

The free version:

http://lavasoft.com/single/trialpay.php

click the tree version not the one which says its not free as you have to go and sign up to weird things

If you think you could have a virus still on your computer and the programs may not be able to delete it, it could be because its in a system file or something. Then i could suggest download Avast anti virus, you can just download and install the software and it will then say about doing a boot up scan, this scans your computer when it is not fully booted up which can then find some viruses if you have any on your system. After the boot up scan you can simply just uninstall it, as personally i do not like the protection it gives you, but feel free to use it as its free. Sorry if the boot up scan seems a bit confusing but if you need help using it just message me.

http://avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html

I could also suggest there free virus scanner

http://avast.com/eng/down_cleaner.html

which is just a virus scanner and not anti virus so will not conflict with your anti virus software that you have installed.

I use Avast antivirus, its free, easy to use, and has pretty comprehensive coverage.  It's caught viruses that other programs previously installed had missed.  www.avast.com.

As for the spyware, I use spybot search and destroy, and lavasoft ad-aware.  Both are free, and have pretty good protection.
