what exactly does processor speed determine, and how big of a difference is 2.5ghz to 3.16ghz?

it depends what micro architecture it is and also its its single/dual/quad core
probaly the 3.16Ghz but links would help
the Ghz is how many operations per second it can complete (basicly) and usualy results in better speeds (but you get processors designed for servers/gaming pcs that do better than the others even if the Ghz is lower

big difference, pretty much means it can run multiple programs faster/easier with less strain on the computer
say a program take 1GHz to run and another takes 1.5GHz. if u have a healthy comp at 3 GHz it should be able to run both at full speed but if u have a game that take the whole 3 GHz to run, other programs may lag when u have both running

nnot really my dad till last week had a 2.6Ghz single core Athlon and it would not do 2 things at once he couldent even open firefox if he was running another program ie win rar or quick par

the way OS work is it dedicates 1 thread (processor) to 1 task so if you only have 1 processor its not goin to take other programs well

thats why i said a "healthy" computer and that is SHOULD not that it WOULD. i took good care of my comps and i had a 600 MHz computer runnin a 500MHz program and 2 internet brwosers as well as an IM program up. it also kinda depends on the computer and the RAM it isnt just one thing

Dual core and HT processors will perform better than single cores and accept parallel data streams.

Pentium 4's and Pentium D's are built around NetBurst architecture, so a higher clock speed for those series is beneficial. Core 2 and Penryn are based on the Core architecture, meaning that a higher GHz rating does NOT guarantee superior performance.

The speed of a processor determines how fast it can interpret instructions it receives. A high FSB (front side bus) speed can improve the clock speed of the CPU.

EXAMPLE: Pentium D @ 3.2 GHz w/ 800 FSB is not as efficient as a Core 2 Duo @ 2.8 GHz with 1333 FSB.

Remember that the processor also needs adequate RAM to function to its potential.
