Is there a way to simply skip the profile import?

The profile import shouldn't be required.  I've installed Ubuntu or various builds off of it half a dozen times, and I've never been required to import a profile.

Using the Wubi installer can bring some problems.  Using the traditional installer is honestly not all that complicated, you could try it that way, rather than fighting just to get an installer working.

Have you tried the Ubuntu forums?  They have a lot more support for Linux related problems.  In fact, they have an entire thread dedicated to a wide host of Wubi problems.  Here's their website.  www.ubuntuforums.org.

I've installed ubuntu number of times along with suse, and fedora core through the regular install but I'm in vista and the news is that vista doesn't really work well when trying to dual boot linux and vista. I've also checked out the ubuntu and wubi forums and haven't found anything useful. I don't really have money for an external hdd now. What distro do you use?

I've got Ubuntu and Vista dual-booted, with no problems during install or otherwise.  The only thing you might want to do is to change the windows partition within Vista rather than using the gParted partition tool in the Ubuntu installer.  But I've installed Ubuntu 7.10 with Vista, as well as LinuxMint 4.0 (basically Ubuntu with extra video/sound/wireless support), and haven't had any problems with the dual boot.
