I am doing the Rube Goldberg Project for school and I have it about half planned. The end point is to get 5 pennies in a "boat" across a foot of fluid. To do that, I will have a magnet or piece of metal atached to the front of the boat and an electromagnet on the other side of the fluid.

Please tell me all you know on electromagnets and DC currents and the like. Thank you.

tell you all I know on Electromagnets and DC current lol.

Google DC current and you will get tons of info. learn the diff. between it and alternating current [AC] both are used for different varieties of high/low voltage/amperage.

You are going to have to pump an awful lot of current through that electromagnet to pull the boat across from the other end. once halfway it should rocket over, but the initial "grabbing" will require some hefty power.

You may need to buy/build a transformer to turn the low voltage AC to High voltage DC.

I'll try to, but I don't have a video camera.
