What kind of specs are you looking at?  Because there are starting to be a handful of UMPCs in that price range.

The EEE's good for now.  But if you can wait (I say you should), big brands like Acer and Dell are jumping into the mininotebook (i.e. cheap, small laptops) bandwagon...so newer updates should be cheaper and better.

Here are some recommendations: EEE PC, MSI Wind, HP 2133, Acer Aspire One..list goes on as the netbook hype continues...

But if you just want that plain-old 15.4" lappie, then I suggest heading off to www.notebookreviews.com to choose your favorite Dell or HP.

I'd recommend against the Acer Aspire.  I had a nightmare with that laptop.  Within about 3 months, the hard drive, battery, and motherboard all died.

The "one" is a newer model and in no way close to what you had.  But low level Acers are POS.

well a mac is out of the question for you unfortunately because they are so nice but acer i think would be  a good place to start. my friend just bought one and she got it for around 750 and it had so pretty decent specs so i think you could find a pretty decent and cheap one but i think when you get it you should downgrade to XP (hurry up cuz i hear they are getting rid of it). the only reason i say to downgrade is because with a really basic PC, it might not run vista so well. keep in mind that if you need this for school you are gonna have to dish out $150 for microsoft office, make sure you get it for XP though if you downgraded and not for vista. wow that was alot

Grab a mid-range 2133, probably your best bet.

If you can hold off for a little bit, get one of the Atom based Eees (they might be out already) or wait and see how the new Dell mininote turns out.
