He did have a right, actually. He can easily argue that freedom of speech doesn't apply in a situation that impedes the peaceful and natural course of education. Know your civil rights.
But does it impede the peaceful and natural course of education is the question!

It was inappropriate for school. You blasted kids should be lucky that you don't have to wear a school uniform. You know it as well as anyone that the shirt was inappropriate for school, so because someone enforced the dress code do not attempt to make them look bad for your share ignorance. Get off your fucking high horse and accept that you were wrong.

Psh, you would have gotten suspended at my school.

They hand out a 50 pages book with (it looks like) Arial font 8 and expect you to read it.

By now, though, you should know what to and to not wear to school.

Thats caselaw.  A right however is something unalienable and inherent in a person such as the right to expression. No one has a right to infringe on the rights of others so saying that anyone (including the principal) had the right to demand the removal is entirely antithetical to the nature of rights.  He may have had authority, he certainly had the power, but he absolutely had no right.

Considering his parents allowed him to wear it (assuming he is under the age of majority) then they have transfered that right to him through their contractual responsibility of being stewards of his rights until the age of majority.  Also considering that their tax money is being taken from them via force for his education and that he and his parents are under force to send him to school (which both constitute duress) his parents sending him to school cannot be considered a contract in which they agree to the terms of the school (which negates the idea the principle had authority).

Thus if he is over the age of majority (or has been emancipated) and he willfully goes to the school is the only condition the principle could be found to have the authority to make such an order.
