Obviously, the first step is to get a decent camera. A friend recently bought me the Nikon Coolpix S210 with: 8.0 Megapixels, VR&ISO2000, 2.5inch LCD, 3x Optical Zoom How is it for photography or just taking nice pictures in general?

that's a P&S right? you'll probably want to get one of those to practice composition and etc. then get a slightly more high-end model, like a digital SLR, like the nokia d40 or d40x or d80, or the canon rebel xt when you're getting pretty good
------- You.. let me believe... and then I failed again.

Using a canon400D atm and the main main thing is how you approach shots. I really haven't had much free time to play with all the settings etc and get the shots i want. It really is about learning new techniques both from the web / books and with experimentation. Regardless of camera you can get some fantastic shots, i mean polaroids prove that.

The Nikon you have will take very nice pictures. It will probably handle anything you throw at it if you are new to photography.

*Nikon D40, D60, etc. I would recomend the D40 if you dont already have an SLR. Its cheap, easy to learn, and its cheap. Oh, and did I mention its cheap? I adore Canon as a brand, and they arent TO expensive, but Ive heard ALOT more praise on the D40. Personally, I dont have a D-SLR, but when I get one (hopefully this year) it will definitely be a Canon, because I already have several lenses (my 35mm is a Canon) and some filters

It's cheap because it packs a whopping 6mp, 3 focus points and no autofocus motor With the release of the Canon 450D and with the even cheaper 1000D on the horizon, if I were looking for my first dSLR I'd probably go for a Canon 400D at the rock-bottom prices they are at atm. Bear in mind you aren't buying a camera body, you are buying into an entire lens system and most likely will realistically be locked into that for the foreseeable future. But that wasn't the question asked.. yes, that camera will be lovely for someone starting out, the Nikon P&S cameras are good.
