Definitely the lens if you actually want to get into photography.  A £5k body isn't going to do you any good if you're shooting with a plasticky, unsharp lens that can't shoot anything above 50mm at under f/5.6.  More importantly, your good lens will last you years and years and will work with any cameras that use  the same lens mount, e.g. my £1.3k 70-200 f/2.8L IS will work on a £40 second hand film EOS 300 with the same functionality as a £5k 1Ds MkIII.  You'll find yourself changing bodies every couple of years as technology advances but lens technology advances much more slowly and a sharp piece of glass, if cared for properly, will always be a sharp piece of glass.
