Suicide is legal in the UK and has never been punished as a crime in the US, most states have repealed any laws that make suicide a illegal as well.

I agree. I do not advocate suicide, but this is a matter much like abortion and a person's basic right to refuse medical treatment: people should have the right to decide their own fate, regardless of the government's perception of their mental state.

yes it would be acceptable, freedom includes the freedom to fuck up, but obviously social problems to discourage people would be okay, just not detaining them against their will
