Not again....

And just beacuse people are traveling faster then the limit doesn't mean the speed limit is useless or old or out dated. People choose to go said faster then limit.

That's fucking idiotic. Just because everyone speeds doesn't make the law stupid, nor does it mean that the law must change because the majority are going fast.
yeah it does

85th percentile rule etc

The Senate and the House of Representatives set the law, not the majority population. Eh, only to an extent and even that doesn't work because of bureaucratic reasons and political agendas.

speed limits are based on how fast people drive... some are obviously outdated. And the senate and house of rep. Do not set the speed limits for state roads.

The speed limit should be 50 for cars and 40 for trucks with trailers.  Everyone would get a 50% increase in fuel efficiency and food would be less expensive.  In fact, cars and trucks should be programmed to never exceed 60mph.  Also, breaking the speed law should be a federal offense with a fine of up to $5,000,000 depending on your tax bracket.  The national debt would be gone in no time.  The world would be saved.

And no you wont get a 50% increase in fuel efficiency. Some cars dont even shift into the top gear at 50. I get about 22mpg going 50 and around 19 going 70... its a difference but not huge. The reason food prices are high is because of the diesel needed to produce and transport food. Shit lowering the speed limits would make food more expensive. Modern diesel engines use e.g.r. because of emissions laws. The engines are actually more efficient under higher loads. My stepdads truck (diesel) gets 17mpg going 80 and 15 going 60.

you are retarded.

I wasn't talking about YOU.  I was talking about averages.  All engines are more efficient at higher loads.  But speed causes an amazing increase in drag.  It doesn't matter how efficiently the engine is turning fuel into energy if almost all of that energy is used up in overcoming the drag.

And yes, 50% was an exaggeration.  So was paying off the national debt and saving the world.  You didn't catch that?

In this case. I fucking agree. I need to get pictures of the Kenai Spur Highway, which has a limit set at 55MPH. The limit should really be set at 70MPH or around that. 55 is ridiculous, at least for this road.

The speed on highways should be more open.  For it to work all that needs to be done is force people to use the left lane for passing purposes only.  Anything that has more than two lanes in a given direction should have a very high or no speed limit.  People who are very concerned with gas mileage and the planet would be able to keep it down because the left lane would be open for passing.  People who want to go faster and get there faster (Just driving down to Champaign IL can be either 2 hours (90mph) or 3 hours (60mph)).

Driving a smaller car (1.6l is tiny by American standards) I have achieved over 30mpg going 90mph 2 hours.  That is with a massive tailwind of though.

and yeah it does make the limit wrong, speed limit too low is unsafe because a few people create aggressive driving by obeying or sort of obeying it to avoid a ticket while everyone else was zooming by

funny enough, i just got off the garden state parkway, utterly horrible, on the 45 mph bridge section, aggressive driving gets about 20 times worse than the 65 sections, because, again, some people are going 55 while most people are doing the usual 70-80

You completely contradict all common sense in your own post. The limit is not wrong because people get aggressive and speed, the people speeding are wrong for being aggressive drivers. Aggressive drivers are shown to cause more accidents then other drivers.

no, the limit is wrong because it causes aggressive driving as a result of disruptions in traffic flow. people will not slow down below 70-90 on the interstate GET OVER IT

So because people choose to break the law and be idiots the law is wrong? ROFL

And people do go the speed limit on the interstate, and rarely do I see any flying past me at 90, or even 80.

Maybe you need to look around other areas besides yours before making such blanket statements.

No, because traffic flows at a certain speed, and putting people who obey the law at risk is wrong. There's also no need to drive 55 mph on an 8 lane highway, or 45 on the same highway on a bridge, ANNNND state statutes require that the speed limit be established based on the 85th percentile.

I don't know where you live, the country? Cause I know people around city areas drive real fast, I was mostly referring to here though. And why are people idiots for caring about their own safety? It's unsafe to drive 55 mph in a 55 zone on the garden state parkway.

I live in a city of about 100K, with out lying areas were around 150-200K. Its no sunday drive, but even through our 55 mph thru zone of highway people obey the law.

I've been through Chicago and even on the main loops people aren't going 20 or more over.

Its not a hard concept to grasp, speeding is not good and your arguments hold no leverage in any light, your 85th percentile arguments are misguided and over used.

no they are not, that is how the state statutes state they are supposed to be set.

im really surprised at that, does that include rush hour? when its 55 here, most people are going 80. and 'speeding' is an arbitrary construct, but i dont want to start this again with you because it will go absolutely nowhere
