The kid who put the noose and said racist things, yes, that was uncalled for and highly disrespectful... But if you look at it from a legal standpoint, he did nothing illegal. That's the beauty of free speach.. But what the Jena 6 did, which was beat up the one kid in an unfair fight, was assault and very violent.

why did the punishment have to be so harsh. People get jumped all the time but that town has a history of major racism. There sentence was only that way because they did that added onto the fact that they were black. There was a hate crime that happened earlier and those white students only got 3 day suspensions and satuday detentions. We fight a white boy and get trials and sentences and all that. Im not justifying them at all because that was an unfair fight...but they had everything working against them in that town. Do they really need to be tried like that? Everything happens for a reason...ask your self why did they feel the need to fight him like that? And the boy wasnt too sick and hurt...he went to a ring ceremony later THAT NIGHT! They didnt hurt him too bad.

So here is my conclusion: Both should have gone to jail

The white guy for discrimination and yes, I'm going to say for threatening people. (And assault)

The six black guys , battery but give them some type of chance I mean again I think they had every right to beat him up but not gang up on him.

Thats fucking racism at its finest. From a legal standpoint, the Jena 6 may not have picked the best decision. But hate speech is unacceptable and hanging a noose from a tree is indictive of a violent threat, especially in the context of African Americana. From a moral standpoint, the fucker who was beaten up fully deserved it. Racism is a sensitive issue and this can be surmised as a crime of passion if taken to the courts.
