jeslyn- I'm very sorry about your BF. There is a very small percentage of Teens who suffer extremes of depression on some antidepressants. It's always a good idea for a doctor and the patient to monitor the effect the pills are having when first prescribed.

For those who go off them, that's great as long as you wean yourselves off them after you and your doctor decide it's time to do that. Unless you are an expert on depression (having it makes you a patient, not an expert) and are trained in pharmacology and the effects on brain chemistry of the antidepressants, then this is a medical condition that needs medical *management* not untrained patients or mothers arbitrarily deciding how best to alter brain chemistry.

To the OP, I'm sorry your mom has inserted herself between you and proper medical care. She likely does not understand that your doctor should be dealing with you. I'd advise you to call your doctor and see if he can get through to your Mom . If nothing else, suddenly stopping SSRI antidrepressants (the most common type, and maybe other types) can cause a plunge into greater depression.

If you need them it's really bad for her to take them away!!

^^For some people they do work but sadly for many they don't help at all, probably because they're not on the right kind or something. I personally think that doctors mostly hand out crappy anti-depresants to everyone when they clearly aren't doing any good

You have a point there- they don't all work for all people and sometimes should be combined with counselling or more intensive therapy. It is up to the doctor AND the patient to work together to see what works and what doesn't. Patients need to stop expecting TV doctor medicine where you spend 2 minutes with the Doc, get a prescription and everything is OK. It can take months or longer to get the right combination of medication type, dosage, frequency and/or therapy. The patient must be able to go back and say "thanks for trying this one Doc, but it's not working. What else can we try?"

My boyfriend was put on them by his parents so he wouldn't become depressed. Guess what? He got depressed using them! He then committed suicide.... =[

If you do seriously feel you need them and your parents say no or if you dont want them to find out and worry about you like i did then there is always the marvols of the internet, you can certainly buy anti-depressents like prozac online, though not as potent as prescription drugs i do feel they helped me (through a normal or placebo like method)
