Ok so I have a decent amount of knowledge about viruses, spyware, malware and adware, i've agreed to try and help and fix my partners computer. Before last week he'd never even heard of virus protection and his computer was flooded with shit, it was supposed to be formatted but it never was.
Anyway my main point is that because of all the shit on there I think it'd be best to boot the computer up in safe mode and try to delete the stuff that way. Only reason for safe mode being that when my partner tried to run a virus scan it took 8 hours and didn't detect a lot of stuff and no other virus scanner would install. I've never usually had to go through safe mode before so i'm not overly sure what i'd do, would I just boot it up in that mode and run a virus scan as normal?
Also because of the state of the computer i'm going to run a lot of stuff-virus scan, adaware scan, disk cleeanup and disk defrag, is there anything else i'd need to run? Plus because the computer's a bit fucked i'm not sure which order I should run the scans and stuff in, any suggestions people?

Id highly recommend using this :

Its a boot cd for windows. Obviously this means youd have to burn the CD first (after downloading it!). The CD contains many apps to help you get windows back up and running including virus and malware apps. After youve got rid of those it recommend booting into windows normally and trying to get rid of everything from there. And obviously install some sort of protection for the future!

If your on a mac or linux then i really do not know how you managed to get a virus and am unaware of any resources for this at this present time!
