Interestingly, danger life of the mother is an incredibly rare occurrence. The legal exceptions generally include "health" of the mother, which can be financial or mental. In other words, whatever one feels would be inconvenienced. Once again, killing the child is not an acceptable option if one thinks their life will not be worth living. I believe the Germans did that, killing off handicapped German children to save money.
Ah yes, the wonderful tactic of bring up Nazi-like situations from otu of the blue even though no one has suggested them. Abortions resulting from consideration of quality of life are not the same as abortions resulting from considerations of one's wallet. Red herrings like this are particularly nasty tactics to make people look bad rather than tackle the real issue. And for the record, your knowledge of Nazi Germany stinks as much as your knowledge of science. Handicapped German children were not aborted to save anyone's money between '33 - '45.
------- Massive, epic adventure, multi-coloured, multi-layered. Sort of two/three dimensional Wizard of Oz for the future.

You're right. They were murdered no matter the age, not just the unborn. It's a very legitimate comparison, I think, point being that someone who had power over the weak, be it the mother or the state, have no right to decide that someone is unfit to live. Perhaps the motive is different, but the result and principle is the same. Hell, I bet that more are unwilling to have the handicapped child for selfish reasons, rather than concern for the child's happiness.

It all depends. Factors that I would consider would be the severity of the disease, the effects on the child, the cost of treatment over a lifetime, the impact it would have on me and my career (would I have to quit my job to take care of it?), the impact on the rest of my family, etc. The career thing seems kind of selfish, really, but to be honest, that's how I feel. If I'm going to work my ass off in college to get a higher degree, I'd better be able to have something to show for it. I'm not going to give up everything to stay at home and raise a disabled child who'll never be able to enjoy the full spectrum of pleasures that life offers. Maybe I just shouldn't ever have kids at all. I don't think I have the right kind of attitude toward motherhood just yet. Maybe I'll have a change of heart when I get older, but we'll have to see.

The result is completely different seeing as it would be different people dying for different reasons under an entirely different system. Nice try, though.
