uh my college expenses are going over 200,000, so way more than 40 thou

  Woo...what are you studying?

um economics and political science. thats just undergrad tho, who knows what its gonna cost if i go to grad school

you picked the wrong damn school.

If your kids get grants and such, 40grand would be more than enough. However, by having so much in savings for them, you screw up their chances for getting government grant money.

Without grants, it all depends on what school they go to.

The first college I went to was about 6,000 a year. Quite cheap and a decent college.

The second college I went to was about 18,000 a year

the school im in now is also about 18-19,000a year.

I should have just stayed at the first school and saved money. I'd be in a MUCH better position than I am now (both financially and educationally). People need to realize that more expensive often does NOT mean better.

no, i picked an excellent school, thanks

i doubt it's worth the money. often times cheaper schools end up being better than expensive ones.

i usually find people that say that are just bitter that they couldnt get into a good school.

If you remember me replying to you in other threads, you take this shit way too seriously because I dont even remember saying anything to you previous to this thread.  It really isnt a big deal, so get over it.

like i said, your decision, your money, so i dont care.

Now let's see how good your comprehension skills are.

Mmm, I think you're wrong actually...yeah, some schools are almost undoubtedly overcharging but some are well worth the cost if you have the grades to get in. I was talking to someone who helps hire people at his company and he told me that he was shocked by how many kids come looking for jobs and don't know their field all that well so going to a cheaper school isn't always worth it. When I named what school I was transferring to, he said that it's expensive but worth it. The graduation rate is low because it's challenging, you can't get out of there without knowing your shit and having some work experience, so the $35,000 a year price tag is appropriate. It's nationally renowned, I'll gladly pay off the $12,000 in loans I have out now.

Also, the more a school costs, the more money it has to give out. That's especially true of private schools, they can pretty much do whatever they want. Shit, I was given $12,000 in grants and scholarships which chops the price down to $23,000 a year which is only a few thousand more than my former school. The two other schools I was at, while cheaper, simply don't compare to this one. And not having a lot of money shouldn't really hurt you all that much. Truth be told, having a lot of money might be what stings you. My Dad retired a year ago and now only makes about $30,000 a year, if he's lucky. I ended up getting $12,000 in grants and scholarships and $12,000 in loans, $4,000 of which is subsidized, $8,000 of which will accrue interest but the rate will be set based on our income. My bf's Dad is a doctor -- he didn't get jackshit and he actually really needs it. So, in the long run, being on the poor side might benefit you.

Anyways, to the OP: I'd try to put away $170 a month. That'd come to a little more than $2,000 a year. Do that for about ten or fifteen years and they should be set.
