((mods, sorry if this is in the wrong forum. I was torn between posting it here or in Deep Thoughts))

Most of us who were in public schools in the past 10 years or so have been through the DARE anti-drug program.

My first DARE class was in fifth grade.
By then, we had already had it ingrained into our minds that all drugs are bad, and anyone who smokes cigarettes needs immediate help, especially if it's a family member.

But DARE put a new spin on things.
We learned, among other similar claims, that "Marijuana will make you fail school", "a bunch of people have jumped out of windows trying to fly while on LSD", and "In high school, you will be pressured into doing drugs because everyone else is doing them."

For the past month, I've been working on a report for English comparing "Go Ask Alice" to "Perks of Being a Wallflower" and needed drug use statistics for it.  I decided that the DARE website would probably have figures for it, so I looked up DARE in google.

Along with the numbers I needed, I found quite a bit of controversy surrounding the program.
While in the DARE classes, I figured that some of it was exaggerated to scare us, but I never realized how much it was actually twisted.

Gives a good overview of the controversy.

they lie, i hated that program. i never made the pledge in 5th grade, i didn't get to walk with my class across the stage or anything. the funny thing is i knew when i was in 5th grade that i would end up where i am now.  the teachers dont' care though, so what good is the program doing anyway?

I always somewhat believed that, especially while in the classes.

But since it was a police officer telling us, I figured it MUST be accurate.

Looking back, even though they lectured against peer pressure and crap, that's really what they did. They used a uniform to intimidate young kids.

ETA: I made the pledge because, of course, it's what EVERYONE ELSE was doing.
More peer pressure.

I find programs like DARE pretty much useless and, more annoyingly, blatantly full of propaganda.

Whenever I see anything they're doing, I get a sudden urge to try meth.

I'm sorry, I assumed some people on here would like to have intelligent conversation other than "OMG LOL IDK IF HE LIKES MEEE?!!?!?"

I liked dare. They brought in some beer goggles one day and it was the first time in my life I wanted to get drunk.

I bookmarked it so I can read it some other time when I'm not so tired, but I remember by the end of 5th grade I was totally against drugs and told myself I was never ever going t touch them, which didn't hold true at all, lol although I don't do drugs anymore.
