so in my history class the teacher said that if it says like "18th century" in the textbook then it is actually referring to 1700-1799? why is it like that? i thought it meant like 1800 to 1899

nope, 18th century is 1700-1799s. rule of thumb subtract 1 and multiply 100.

no. because the first century would have been the year 0-1000. making the second century 1001-1099. etc.
