If you want to use an image you've found online for a project of yours, how do you go about doing it? I don't want to get in trouble for stealing someone else's work but I'm not sure what the rules are on this.
For example, I found a picture on Flickr that I quite like but I'm not sure what to do.

Bullshit. In the US, an original artwork or intellectual property item is automatically copyrighted. The proper means is to contact the owner of the image, and ask permission to use it. If you found it on Flickr, then the information you need in order to contact the owner is right there. A simple email would be the proper thing to do.
