Concealed and Open Carry
Having a gun with me because I feel like it

Within a week or two, I'm going to buy a pistol and get a concealed carry license. I like the idea of having a weapon on me, and I feel that as I am a responsible person I have the right to it and will use it (or not) at the proper times.

As I did more research into the matter, I found that one can openly carry a gun without a license. I honestly like this idea even more. Besides the blatant visual deterrent, I think it would be more comfortable and would allow me to carry a larger weapon. However, Ann Arbor, where I'm in college, has a city ordinance against it, despite the fact that a Michigan Supreme Court decision voided such laws. It does sound like a bit of trouble, but I was never one to bend to pressure when I am within my rights.

Any thoughts on or experiences with open carry, or carrying in general?

Concealed FTW. Openly showing a weapon just seems arrogant.

Unless you like getting stared at and scaring the shit out of store owners who think you're about to rob them, concealed carry permits are the way to go.

The idea of carrying a weapon around just for the hell of it scares me. Too many shitty accidents can happen. Bleh, I hate just thinking of that. But, I'm scared of guns anyways.

My hubby is a police officer. He said only stupid people openly show or "brandish" a firearm. It causes nothing but problems. He just saw your post and scoffed. He thought it was funny for you to say you felt you were responsible and such. I, personally, believe only LEOs and military should be allowed to carry weapons in public. There isn't a reason for anyone else to.

Pity the founders of America thought otherwise.

LOL at your hubby.

A: Michigan Attorneys general have written opinions stating that "brandishing" involves waving the gun about. Thus, open carry does not fall under that category.

B: It's none of his business what I regard to be responsible or not. I actually just read a post about an encounter with a police chief who thinks like he does. You can find it at the bottom of the linked page.

To Bear Arms is fine and dandy. I have nothing against that. He thinks everyone should have a shotgun in their homes for protection. But to have a gun in a holster and this guy to waltz around public makes uneasy is just horrid.

I'm never at home, I'm always in public. And I'm a law abiding citizen. What's the problem? I'm bearing the arms with me. Not leaving it in my closet. The fact that you are uneasy about it is not my problem.

Actually, if your profile info that says you're from Arizona is accurate, I doubt that's the case. Arizona is one of the most lax states for open carry, and is a "shall-issue" state for concealed carry permits.

I suggest that everyone check out these sites and learn the actual rules for carry. It's not like it's some sinister or arcane secret to get to exercise your right.
