Websites that are that big tend to have their own servers, that way they have much more flexibility.

Few grand for the server its self and upwards of $250 a month for the connection.
You're serious? Think of the traffic, even just the homepage hits MySpace gets per hour, let alone per day, week or month. They have MULTIPLE servers with MULTIPLE broadband connections. Broadband as in, T3 or OC-48 or something along those lines. In which case, that's easily $5k+ for EACH server plus well over $5000 a month for the amount of bandwidth they use. I work at an IT company and we host a small amount of websites, around 200. We have 9 servers plus a few more for redundancy. Multiple cable connections and a couple T1's. Our main company objective isn't even hosting - that's about 20% of our business. Just to give you an idea.
I was giving the bare minimum of what it takes to run your own server. I know Myspace and google have server banks, massive racks with a mazes of wires, and uber fast connections.
