That is pretty true, yes. The plastic is not as hard, so if you accidentally hit your teeth it is less likely to chip. Also, if you bite on the metal ball, it will likely chip your tooth, but if you bite on the plastic ball (hard enough to have chipped your tooth) it will simply crack and break the ball instead, thus saving your tooth. I have had my tongue pierced for years, and have gone to the dentist multiple times, and he has never had anything negative to say about my piercing other than the fact that he finds it superficially distasteful, which is fine with me.

they dont have as much mass, and therefore not as much force. there will be some damage, but very little compared to metal

acrylic is probably safer than metal, yes. what you really ought to worry about is finding a decent piercer and making sure you keep it happy while it's healing.

The plastic isn't as hard...I broke my teeth due to a metal ball. However, using the flat tongue ring tops are better on your teeth. You'd be best to use those.
