Okay, here's the deal....
I'm an agnostic leaning more towards Atheism...I won't deny it, but today my mom made me go to church, and, it being mother's day, I didn't want to upset her, so I did.
So I walk into the church, sit down (away from my mom) and a few minutes into the sermon, while I'm pondering why the fuck I'm here, and thinking about how bored and uncomfortable I am, this guy sits next to me.
So I'm like whatever, it's okay, he just had no place else to sit, but about 10 minutes into it, he leans over and asks me "Do you know what's going on?"
me: No, I'm not paying attention.
him: Then why are you here?
me: Well...I'm atheist....but my mom made me come today....
him: oh, and you didn't want to upset her 'cause it's mother's day, right?
me: yeah....
him: why are you atheist?
me: because too many bad things have happened for me to believe in God anymore.
him: oh, I see...I guess that's a valid reason....It must be hard to be here then, right?
me: I guess...I get very bored
him: oh....what do you do when things get hard then?
me: I try to fix it.
him: what if someone dies? How will you fix it? You can't bring them back...
me: I know...I guess I try to clean up the mess they left...
him: ahh...why don't you believe He's not up there?
me: because, while I grew up Catholic, I've prayed and prayed, and He never came through for me....I had to do everything alone.

So we continue talking and he asks me a bunch of questions that are not exactly nosy, but awaken a bunch of feelings of doubt and the hurt I have towards God for not being there for me....so I answered his questions, and got a little teary eyed a few times...but while I was talking to him, I felt weird...like he knew what I was thinking...like he could sense what I was feeling...and the whole time we were talking, my inner voice was chattering away and screaming things at me so fast, I could barely comprehend them....It felt like he could see who I was...and he didn't judge me....he just listened to my answers and my reasons....but the whole while, my conscience was asking me, "Is that really it?" when I would say something....it was so surreal, it was like he KNEW who I was despite just barely meeting me.

I know you may call me crazy, and I know I may be reading into this too much, but, I really do feel like this is a sign...the sign that I've been begging God for, to give me....I mean, I swear I was almost brought to tears several times.....

Do any of you have any insight or advice?

Whatever floats your boat. If a monotheistic path makes you happier then by all means, go for it.

Take it as what you want - it sounds to me like you don't really want to be an atheist, but you've picked that path because you feel like you've been screwed over, so why bother believing, right?

But the fact that you got teary eyed and the fact that you have been asking God for a sign tells me that you want to believe, you just are afraid that if you do give your soul over (sorry if I sound cheesy) you might get hurt.

From what I have read, it seems to me that you do want to believe - you've been begging for a sign and you want to believe that this is one.

Go with your gut.

It doesn't sound too amazing. It's easy to spot someone where they don't like to be / don't belong. He probably assumed either you have weak faith, agnostic or atheist and hoped to convert you. You sound like you're an atheist because god screwed you over. Once he established this, he probably believed you'd be easy to convert and you were. It was a regular person not an "angel". If you wish to comfort yourself and believe it was an angel, go ahead.

Angels come in various sizes, ages and appearance. But who they are is not the important thing, it's what they do for you that counts. If he reawakened feelings you've suppressed maybe you weren't quite the atheist you thought you were. There is a difference between being angry with God and disbelieving in His existence.

It's perfectly natural to have all those feelings but my initial reaction is not to let your feelings get in the way of your thinking.

Most likely he could empathize with you because he's a person just like you are. I've read plenty of books, watched plenty of films and talked to plenty of people who make me feel like you felt (although not centred around whether or not God exists), the important thing to remember is to keep an open mind and don't just accept wild supernatural conclusions as the easy answers they provide.

people like this are quite common to me. theyre just people who believe they have their whole life figured out in accordance to a religion. they can be happy as they truly believe god is there for them and will take them to heaven for believing in him. apart from them believing they have a complete understanding of life they are pretty human to me

for some reason these people often come up to me (atheist with strong values) and all of them regardless of their religion seem to have all their kinks worked out.

in the water in queensland a 7th day adventist tried to convert me to christianity.

a rabbi saw me on (chapel street) and his first question was y dont you believe in the jewish god anymore (kinda creepy) and it was completly random he spotted me in thousands of people. i explained it to him my beliefs, he spoke to me in a questioning yet understanding way like what happened to you and then he walked off.

it feels weird but no they are just humans with a perfect mindframe
