Ok, it's a 1993 lasebre limited. It has a short in the ignition where sometimes when I turn the key nothing happens at all. But since last night the car has been cranking up but won't start. I thought maybe it needed gas so I put 2 gallons in it from a cas can. It came on one time then shut off. I kept pumping the fuel pad but it won't turn on. Do you think it might be a spark plug problem? This car has 160,000 miles on it and god knows whens the last time this car went into shop.

So give me idea's on what to do.

could be a spark plug problem.

Get a tune-up. a nice full engine overhaul tune-up.

one of my cherokee's has 160,000 and runs like brand new and the other runs just a little rougher [though it gets better mileage] and it has 220,000. 160 is a baby, in my eyes [especially for a 93, cars just aren't made like they used to be]

shut the fuck up idiot, all you do is say "buy a new car" or "lol buy a monte carlo" i seriously wish you'd fucking leave this forum, you're an imbecile

Snowcone, I'd check the crankshaft position sensor.

If it were spark plugs , it would run but have a rough idle and rough running throughout the range.

When you turn the key to on, does it make a whining sound? (The fuel pump makes a whining noise momentarily in most cars, listen for it)

Is there any check engine lamps on when you turn the key to "on" like it is when it is running w/o cranking it?

Let me know what's up and I'll help you further diagnose it.

Definitely check the CPS. the most likely culprit.

It's funny how I know these cars like the back of my hand and suggested both, ain't it..

I know what I'm talking about. I owned a 1995 Pontiac Bonneville, which is identical chassiswise, engine, and transmission, and suspensionwise to the LeSabre, Olds 88, 98, Park Avenue Buick and a few other cars.

This sounds like a CKP or a FP .

there might be a NSS [neutral safety switch] malfunction.

civic, you might be able to shed some light here, I don't know if lasabre's have NSS's, But from the vehicles i've worked on, if there is a problem in neutral, it is usually that.

I fixed it, I put gas in the car and it can start up now atleast. But I still have that short in the ignition. I'm able to sometimes start the car in park but can't start it in neutral.

I thought the same thing, but my dad's b13 sentra won't start up if you don't press the gas...  might have to do with something else though...

to the op- first thing that comes to mind is fuel pump..

i will bet 5 bucks that its the NSS. [if it runs crappy, thats a different problem, but the not starting thing is probably this]

problems:
Intermittent not starting
will crank, but not start
wont start in neutral

all signs point to NSS and fuel pump for checking and fixing.
