so anyone here have a computer that they use at home that runs linux for a server? i'm looking into this so i can just access my home computer from school and get the files along with maybe doing webhosting. any suggestions on what i can use as in software? would i have to get a better connection? i wouldn't expect alot of connections. also would the isp do anything if i tried this? i know a guy who has his own business for web hosting but i had a class with him last semester so i can't really talk to him because we dont have class together anymore.

you can run a server through Windows or Linux. i always used xampp. it comes with Apache, MySql, and some other crap. i ran it through my cable connection and it worked fine. you wouldn't have the bandwidth to be able to do any webhosting though.

if you just want a file server then you can use HFS or Abyss.
they're way easier than setting up Apache and a lot more lightweight.
remember that you'll have to open up port 80 for Abyss if you're using a router. You'll also have to open one up for HFS depending on which port you choose.
