Today the high school marching band instructors came to talk to us and go over our music for next year. I'm currently in 8th grade so next year will be my first year in marching band. Anyways, I was just wondering, for those of you already in marching band what am I in for? I'm excited about marching but I just am kinda worried that I'll be looked down upon my upper classmates for being a marching n00b lol.

It really depends on what types of marching band your school has.  Do they compete or just play in a few parades around town?

Mine always started with a band camp (where you learn to march) so that you are not completely clueless.  Sure, you'll be a bit of a n00b, but the other students want to have a successful band, so they won't mind answering your questions and helping you out.  It's not a huge scary thing.  Just have fun and stay on task.

Right now I am percussion in the regular band but the percussionists have to go for a extra week of band camp to get put on the right instrument for us.

The marching band has placed top 5 in our state in the last 15 years... so I think they're pretty good

Get ready for a lot of hard work and a lot of fun! Being in marching band for the last 4 years was one of the best things I could have ever decided to do.

this year was my first year. you have to concentrate but have fun too. seeing as how the other people dont want to suck, they'll help you out. and it gets frustrating when you're in the heat trying to get the drill right so take nothing to heart. it really is fun and a great experience especially if you compete. plus our school is only 3 years old so it really was amazing. i'm sure you'll love it. i do.

If your marching band has had a prestigious history, then you can bet that all the upperclassman will despise you.  (Okay maybe not that harsh)  But they will probably blame the n00bs in arrogance.

The my band here is one big family.  It's the best way to meet people since you'll be forced to interact before school even starts.  And when you actually start school, you'll have however many familiar faces to have lunch with or ask for directions.  You'll immediately have a whole lot of friends, unless you're really annoying or something.

It will be a struggle if you're bad a multitasking (which all males are).  First you have to be able to march well.  Then you'll have to know all of the drill by heart.  And on top of all that, you'll need to know your music backwards and forwards.

Memorizing your music as soon as possible is the best way to succeed.

I HIGHLY recommend doing marching band. The trips rock, but if you guys compete, be prepared for hours of hard work in the sun. Marching band has opened up my life, I am in drum and bugle corps now, and it is AMAZING. take any opportunities you can get!!
