I was at karate earlier and while we were waiting for class to start, one of the older guys was reading The God Delusion by Richard Dawkins (excellent book, go read it) and then him, his wife, and I started discussing how ridiculous many creationists sound when they try to refute scientific evidence and the origin of so many different religions throughout the world. He asked how so many cultures have their own creation myths and religions and how it fits into evolution. I said it fit into evolution because it is human nature to desire to belong to a group and religion is something in which you can both belong to a group and have an answer to the most fundamental question: why? Humans always want to know why this and why that and for many, religion answers that question. I said therefore, since people are belonging to a group, they are better able to care for their offspring and have greater reproductive success.
I think religion is easier to teach to a child because when you're young, you'll believe anything anybody tells you. Kinda like when you mom and dad told you santa brings you presents on Christmas or the tooth fairy takes your teeth when they fall out and gives you money. Children want to believe in these fantasies and I feel like religion plays right into that.
So what do you guys think? How does religion fit into evolution? Why do you think people believe so strongly in something that they have no solid proof of?

I will rue the day when patriotism is defined as putting a
"Support the Troops" magnet on the back of your
SUV and keeping your mouth shut when the
government royally screws you over big time. Oh, wait....
