So yeah... I made a topic about my drivers failing me about a week ago.

Now, I'm starting to think it's time for me to buy a new video card. It keeps crashing at random moments and I'm afraid it's eventually going to disrupt my computer as a whole (I am known to literally wear out computers, unfortunately).

I pretty much just need help pricing them and finding a place I can order one that is decent and not to incredibly expensive. I am a poor college student here, so I'm on a rather tight budget.

What i would do is decide which card i want, the put the name into google. I know a really good Australian site for hardware but I imagine that wouldn't be much good to you.

Just read your old topic, we may yet be able to solve this issue on current hardware. For the most part, graphics cards don't really wear out, they either work or they don't.

Can you give me your OS, the graphics card full name your using and as i think you now know a bit about finding this out, can you also pull up the driver version. If you can't get any one of those i can guide you through it.

Otherwise i will see if i can make some suggestions for new cards.

As a side note, AGP or PCI-X? do you know?

That's more than I can handle at this time. I honestly do not have that much money...

7600GT, 7800GT, 8600GT are pretty good cards 2, with the new release of the 9 series the 7 should be pretty cheap by now

Windows XP Professional 2002
AMD Athlon XP 2400+
Driver? ---> S3 Graphics ProSavageDDR

Not quite sure about the AGP/PCI-X question... I think it's PCI.

I've been told by several CS majors that I will eventually need to update it. So it's no surprise it's becoming a pain in the ass all of a sudden. I wish I had a Mac...

My BF said the very same thing when he found out I like to play video games, lol.

But yeah, thank you very much with the help so far. I'm going to try to save what I can first, but I'm going to go ahead and at least start price hunting and shopping for another.

I bought a 8600GT with 512MB DDR3 factory overclocked from 475 to 600mhz and memory was 1400mhz. Those specs being similar to the 8800 but not the same ofcourse, differnet chipset different gpu. But anyway, that was only $150AUD wheras the 8800 with 512 is about $450, and this was before the 9 series was out, so i guess that card would be dirt cheap by now, especially seeing that everything in america seems to half of what i pay in australia.

Ok, not quite the answers I was after.

Go Start -> Run and type in "dxdiag" without the quotes and hit run.

On the box that pops up, goto the Display 1 tab, then give me the name on the left and the driver version on the right.

I don't suppose you happen to know, but I'm guessing your on AGP which will make this a little less complicated in picking a card. It will limit your choice and thankfully your price, but unfortunately also the performance.
