I don't think it has anything to do with being "retarded." I think that too many people are swept up in a trite little cliche that they think makes them cool or with it, when in fact they just blend in with the horde. It's annoying to me, but I don't get agitated about it anymore. I usually view the advice and realize it's often as usually simplistic and incorrect as the language used and move on.

It's because people are lazy... and are n00bs... That applies immensely here... And it pisses me off too... I mean, it takes two extra seconds... and if you don't want to type it, there's a reason for the spell check button! You pick the one you want! It couldn't get any easier, and yet, I question whether it needs to be to make people type correctly... Maybe shock collars...
