question

I'm fairly new to computer building and one of the things I want is to be able to connect HD(high definition) devices to my computer. First question, is this done through the monitor or the video card? Second question, what should I look for to do this, like specific number, acronyms, or names?

Ok first, that didn't answer either question. Second, CRT monitors don't exist, third, I have a 9600GT. sorry, but that wasn't helpful.

It is done from the video card.  But there are external devices available that can send out the same signal to two different monitors (TV=monitor).  If you are building a media center PC for use only with a TV then you will only need the one monitor (TV).  But most (if not all) modern video cards offer 2 DVI ports out anyway.

You can now be presesnted with two options that I would recommend for video signal methods.  A DVI or VGA cable (from DVI port with a small cheap converter, one usually comes with video card) from the PC to the TV.  Or you can go through methods such as S-Video or component video cables if your video card supports it.

As for sounds through the PC things can get tricky, if you have specific questions I may be able to help.

S-video is not HD.

To the OP: It all depends on what you're trying to do. Are you trying to watch TV/movies/etc. on your computer while being able to use the computer or are you just trying to use the monitor as a display for your computer and also TV/movies/etc?

If you're trying to show HD content via your computer, obviously it's through your video card. This route allows DVR-like capabilities to your computer, providing it has neccesary specs.

If you're just trying to use the display for multiple purposes, just use the inputs on the display.
