I just detailed my engine, I hosed everything. But, I did it in my auto shop so I was able to use an air hose to blow out all of the water out of the alternator. In the case you dont have an air hose, watch out for the fuse box (if its under the hood), alternator, and the belts. The battery can get wet, just make sure to wipe it off with a rag or something when you're done.
