IMO hydrocodone (vicodin) is at its best when you take it before throbbing pain sets in. once that nerve is pounding though it seems like hydro just won't cover it up. try taking it in anticipation of the pain and it should work pretty well. taking it during moments of extreme pain won't help much. if the pain is persistant and won't go down without taking excessive doses of hydrocodone then you might need something like low dose oxycodone (percocet). but if you decide to use the powerful stuff you must understand it comes with very powerful side effects... and not pleasurable ones.
if you really have something in your neck causing pain your doctor should be able to see it by running some scans and then he'll have a legitimate reason to give you proper pain medication. don't be afraid to let him know if the medicine your being given is working or not. and i'd say you should especially not be afraid of contesting if the doctor won't allow you to take anything more powerful than tylenol and advil for the pain (if these medicines are not stopping the pain).
if your doctor is just a real dick you can just get documentation of your injury done and then get an online consultation using those records. it's pretty easy to get tylenol with codeine (tylenol 3) or low-dose generic vicodin pills from a remote consultation. anything else is too tightly controlled to safely shop around for. you probably don't need anything stronger than tylenol 3 anyway...
