Leviticus 11:13-19

And these are they which ye shall have in abomination among the fowls; they shall not be eaten, they are an abomination: the eagle, and the ossifrage, and the ospray, And the vulture, and the kite after his kind; Every raven after his kind; And the owl, and the night hawk, and the cuckow, and the hawk after his kind, And the little owl, and the cormorant, and the great owl, And the swan, and the pelican, and the gier eagle, And the stork, the heron after her kind, and the lapwing, and the bat.

The god of the bible must have been sleeping in zoology class. I think he deserves detention.

Any alternate translations for the original Hebrew? "Flying creatures," perhaps?

Mmkay, then. You go back in time and explain to ancient people who know nothing about modern biology the difference between bats and birds. See how well it goes over.

Taxonomy of that kind is not complex. Modern biological expertisse is not needed to notice; "hey! All them thar' aminals has beaks n fethers, and thisun here has furs and not a beak on 'im!"

If Jehovah inspired the text, it seems he should've been able to point out the difference. And if no god had anything to do with the text, it seems some Jew should've been able to notice the difference.

So, I'm actually going to have to side with the lost-in-translation/cultural-relevance-issues lobby on this one. The important thing was getting the point across, that "these are the flying things you shouldn't eat."

...which was basically what I was trying to say, so all of that wasn't really necessary.

Could indicate the ignorance of the writers. It is not that hard to believe. Also, there is no evidence for lost in translation.

Actually, the vast majority of scholars agree that the texts used to translate the KJV are probably some of the worst used in translation.

Feel free to dig up other texts or concede.

Sorry, Moridin, but you're grasping at straws with this one, as anyone who's ever studied the Bible is saying...even the atheists.

Find a new crusade, troll, or gtfo.

Why do you get to decide what posts aren't necessary? I went into more depth than you.

It's pretty hard for me to believe that any group of humans (yes, even the ancient Jews) would be unable to notice that the bat shared no qualities with birds except its mode of transportation, if it mattered to them. The point is that the bat was yet again an unclean animal, and it was quicker to say "these are the birds you mustn't eat," than "you shan't eat these birds, also don't eat bats."

*shrug* I'm just wondering, if you were just going to agree with me, why you bothered to go into all of that. It seems like a waste of time.

Do you have the approximate date that the different species were originally separated by distinct classifications?
