Isn't the very nature of police work the concept of placing themselves in danger deliberately? When they confront an armed robber, don't they deliberately put their lives in danger. Sort of goes with the territory doesn't it?
Many cops are more self preservative than they are willing to die for a stranger; a single member of society.

I said cops, by the very nature of what they do, deliberately place themselves in danger. I never said anything about martyrdom or willingess to die. No one particularly wants to die, but every cop realizes that s/he is in a position to be killed in the line of duty. Nobody expects cops to die unnecessarily, but the question is should they place themselves in danger deliberately, and the answer is that they do that every time they turn the key to start their shift.
