The whole referendum was a complete mess anyway. The majority of the no voters were doing it to spite the goverment or because the believed the "LISBON TREATY ENCOURAGES HOMOSEXUAL IMMIGRANT ABORTIONISTS" propoganda, and the the majority of yes voters also didnt have a clue about it and voted out of instinct or just because.

It isn't gibberish. It's not at all layman-friendly but there was lots of easier to understand objective explanations of it out there.

If the rest of Europe ratify the treaty, Ireland will have to cave.

And today has nothing to do with giving the finger to Europe. In theory, it's about doing what's best for Ireland. In reality it's just an excercise in why democracy doesn't always work.

Do you even know WHY Ireland had a referendum for the treaty? It changes our constitution, so if the government ratifies it they're going against the constitution, the supreme court and the president will overturn the decision and Lisbon will STILL be rejected. Either way, Lisbon's dead in the water. The no voters turned out in force here to vote, it was the biggest single referendum here in over a decade so I can't see the Irish public changing their minds just because the rest of europe's governments say we should. Keep in mind that this treaty gives Germany, France and (I think) Italy the power to vote down every other European state.

The no voters didn't exactly turn out in force either. I think less than 50% of registered voters turned up and it was pretty close.

The overwhelmingly majority of the Irish public or for the matter European public know sweet fuck all about the actual treaty. It just so happens that the 'no' campaign appealed to more voters. The result has nothing to do with what the public thinks about the treaty because nobody bothered to educate themselves on the matter.

Actually most of the no campaigners were very highly educated about the treaty, and even the government task force to educate the country about the treaty had to be told by a journalist about certain parts of it. So if even the people hired specifically to be educated about it don't understand it, theres no hope for an ordinary Joe Soap to understand it at all.

And before you say I never actually researched it myself, I did. I can't understand it and (not trying to sound pompous) I'm pretty highly intelligent. I can't see the point in signing a contract you don't understand so even though I'm not able to vote, I mentally voted no to it. I'm not anti-Europe, the result isn't anti-Europe. The result is a simple statement that Ireland will NOT sign a contract that the people don't understand.

The yes campaigners here were saying they were having a tough time "selling" the treaty (always a bad sign if they have to use language like that) because it was so complicated and intricate, with no major points that you could say "well yes, that would help Ireland, as well as every other state in the Union." IMO, its Europe's fault the treaty was rejected because they made it so complicated. If it was straightforward, I believe it would have been comprehensively passed.
