I just went to church

I just went to church and it was weird... There was the usual boring songs written in the 1800's with words like "thou art" in them.
And there was a song sung by the junior choir which implied that God must have made the world because it couldn't have happened by "chance".
About half way through the service the very small kids left for their sunday school session is another room. I wanted to go and hear what sort of stuff they get taught.

One thing that I do like about Church is the Confessions booth.
God have I told some funny lies in my time.
I told the pastor I was gay once (i'm not) but the bullshit they give you about faith and following god is frickin hilarious.

They get a children's version of the gospel read to them, then the leader asks if anyone has an example of the message, eg. Here Jesus talks about the importance of being kind to each other, can anyone think of a time when they were kind to others?

Then they are given sheets with wee Jesus cartoons and puzzles and questions like, Write about three times when you felt sad? Tehy colour them in and have wee chats and then they go backt o the church to join their parents.

That's how it was done whenever I used to run the Children's Liturgy in my church, anyway. Although the kids were only gone for about 15-20 minutes, and we're Catholics.

I take it the OP is an Anglican? If so, it's very similar to what Katy posted. I've run it for both Catholics and Anglicans, there's really very little different.

Churches vary reasonably when it comes to how they operate. I've been to Baptist, Church of Christ, Pentecostal, Anglican and Catholic churches. Not all churches use the old music and lyrics, but some still prefer it. From what I remember, sunday school tended to focus on small messages as well as having fun and mucking around. Whether or not they managed to do that is a matter of perspective. I will say that I have found protestant churches, in particular Churches of Christ, to be a lot more lively.

there's a presbyterian church down the street from my college i've been to a few times with my christian friends. the music is pretty good and its very lively. then the sermon starts and i completely lose my mind.

op i'd like to know what it is they're telling those kids. it baffles me that children are even involved in religion, seeing as how they're not old enough to make that kind of decision.

Why? I'm certain that at that age you would have thought you had the capacity to learn. It's not like it's a threatening belief. At a young age, I don't believe there is anything wrong with taking kids to church. Sunday school is by no means a brain washing exercise.. it's pretty much like a day care. By adolescence, people are naturally critical of their parents teachings, and that's when they will tend to decide what they believe.

seeing as how they're not old enough to make that kind of decision.
What kind of decision would that be?

I haven't been to church since october (twas racial justice sunday and my mum paid me £40 to go).... We still have to sing the hymns at school- very creepy. They either use the old stuff about angels and sacrifice or modern crap that's trying to be soul- I feel embarresed for the Catholic Church (though I am not a member, I was just brought up Catholic). The Children's liturgy is a "fun" version of the gospel story followed by art/ craft activities for a religious theme or planning a procession for the next feast day. (My mum runs these things). It is very boring

adopting a complex system of beliefs on the basis that authority figures have handed it to them, as opposed to arriving at these same conclusions through logic and reason

so an Athist in athoroty is just as wrong as a theist telling them there is a God.

Also how will said child learn about said religion? the kid can just say no when he's older you know

Well, for one, it's not that complex. And for two, that's not the decision they would be making in Sunday School, anyway.

indoctrinating children with information in any event is wrong, i agree. my point is that children should learn how to think critically rather than substitute gaps in their knowledge with dogma.

i consider myself an atheist but i occasionally go to christian services/take part in christian fellowship meetings/sing in chapel choir/go on religious retreats, all because i am interested in the subject. if a person wants to become religious, they ought to do so when they're capable of making their own decisions rather than having other people make that decision for them.
