They get a children's version of the gospel read to them, then the leader asks if anyone has an example of the message, eg. Here Jesus talks about the importance of being kind to each other, can anyone think of a time when they were kind to others?

Then they are given sheets with wee Jesus cartoons and puzzles and questions like, Write about three times when you felt sad? Tehy colour them in and have wee chats and then they go backt o the church to join their parents.

That's how it was done whenever I used to run the Children's Liturgy in my church, anyway. Although the kids were only gone for about 15-20 minutes, and we're Catholics.

Do you mean that they didn't strap them into chairs with their eyes taped open and bombard them with images of homosexuals and Muslims killing baby deer?

Strange.  It's almost like Jesus Camp wasn't an accurate cross-section of how churches deal with children.

indoctrinating children with information in any event is wrong, i agree. my point is that children should learn how to think critically rather than substitute gaps in their knowledge with dogma.
So we should not teach children anything until they are old enough to decide what it is they want to learn?

It's true.  It's actually a grievous crime against humanity that Americans...neigh all men every where... begin indoctrinating their children at birth with on language.  What happens when that little Parisian child decides that if he had been allowed to exercise his free will that Turkish would have been his first language.  It's too late.  Those filthy parents indoctrinated him with French, forever tainting his linguistic interactions with the rest of the world.

Here is America, we let the government start indoctrinating our children at five with things like science, math, and...literature!  It's shameful really.

fair enough, allow me to rephrase:

indoctrinating children with information that is lacking in a factual basis is wrong.

e: religion to me does not seem as essential as language, laws, etc. and i don't see the necessity for its inclusion in an early age. that is my main point.

I've often wondered why some people use the word "indoctrinate" when putting down religion but switch to the word "teach" when speaking of most other ideas and "factual" subjects that ought to be learned. I don't feel like I was ever "indoctrinated" as a child. My mother taught me what was important to her and what she believed I should learn. Things like love, understanding, beauty, sharing... not too much "factual" stuff there.

i'm not sure i follow. are you saying these are exclusive to your religion/religion in general? i'm not denying that they're a part of it, but people can still be good without adopting a complex system of beliefs.

I'm saying that those things are without factual basis as per your statement:

indoctrinating children with information that is lacking in a factual basis is wrong
You didn't mention that you only meant religious things that have no factual basis. So now you want to separate all things of religion from other non-factual things that we should be 'indoctrinated' with?

Oh, and you still think religious beliefs are complex?

i was going to respond but since i feel i am digging myself into a hole, i am going to stop digging and give this all some thought before (maybe) returning.

that said, if you could explain how religious beliefs are not complex i'd like to read it.

I can only speak for myself and my belief, but it's pretty basic. I believe in God, the creator, who has given us life and wants us to love each other. I believe that He sent His Son to teach us more of the things He wants us to know. Not complex at all. Learning all of those things He wants us to know may involve a little time and effort, but I don't see that as complex or even complicated. Less complex than learning a language or even basic math. It's certainly not 'rocket science'.
