Catholic Church is modernizing?

My girlfriend and I have seem much of that. I was born into Catholicism(not sure what I am now...maybe just spiritual/deist?), and just recently sought advice from the priest at my church about my bisexuality. Surprisingly, he was extremely supportive. He stated that many Bishops have published articles stating that homosexuality is a reality, and tolerance should be practiced. He told me he isn't God, so he can in no way condemn me. He actually told me to listen to my heart, and do what's right for me.

I was pretty floored hearing all this, and honestly, excited. My dad reacted with the stereotypical fundie reaction, and the priest of our church being on my side was very comforting.

Has anyone seen signs of this modernization?

That's how I was always taught (went through the whole Catholic school system). The Catholic church is actually very divided on the issue and due to that, many priests and other members of the church remain impartial on the issue.

The ones that are completely against it are the older members (the churchgoers, not the bishops and such, I'm talking about). Which isn't too much different than the rest of society, if you think about it. My grandma was racist and completely against the LGBT community, same with my other grandma (one was Catholic and the other Presbyterian - not in that order).

I went to Catholic school my entire life and I'm now 20 years old.

I know certain things about the Church's teachings, but not all or perfectly.

I have been 'hearing' things that the current Pope is becoming more tolerant or lenient about contraception (that is, condoms) to Prevent AIDS in certain countries.

Someone mentioned that masturbation is not considered a sin in the Catholic Church anymore, but I don't believe that.  I can't find any articles about it.

Perhaps the Church is modernizing and it's about time.

Yes, the catholic church is starting to modernize because the world forces the change up on it. Scripture has lost against science and the modern world, and they are doing all in their power to hold on. It is a loosing battle.

That priest or bishop does not represent a true Catholic faith if he is holding such views; it is sad for him in that position to express such a foul opinion that hold no ground basis.  I'm sure most of us men find an idea of girl and girl action to be extremely "hot" thing but that does not mean it is right it is still sinful act.  I am sure he the priest rationalize it due to his liking and perverted mind in his own of lesbian action rather than a theological opinion.  For this reason I tend to dislike the word liberation and modernization in religion; I endorse hard core religious conservatism.

You Grandma was not a "racist" towards the LGBT rather she was a realistic.  A woman of strong faith and thinks with logic  and common sense I respect her views.

Moridin, I don't think it's a losing battle. I just think many churches are realizing that culture and opinions have changed, and it's wise to change with the times.
