All in all, though, I like this policy.  A denial of service should be a huge wake up call to those who don't really intend to cause any harm, or who just get caught up in the moment and/or drama of flamewars, and is a pretty sufficient punishment if they're not likely to be repeat offenders.

After a member has been banned from the site, they are not permitted to return to LiveWire for a minimum of seven days, at the end of which they shall be allowed to return on a second account. This account shall be closely monitored for any misconduct, but to all extents and purposes shall be treated as a clean slate. Should the member choose to further infringe upon the Guidelines to the degree where they are a destructive presence on LiveWire, they shall again be banned from the site.

It's the same principle with punishing kids. If they know that there is even a chance they will get their privileges back, then the punishment won't work. Worse still, if they know they are entitled to a return/reprieve, then they have even less motivation to keep their good behaviour consistent and less reason to think of a ban as undesirable or as a punishment. Most of the time, kids will improve their behaviour in order to get their privileges back and then return to their old habits. Bara is a perfect example of this. He's ok in the week or so after he is allowed back, and then he starts telling people to kill themselves again.

If banned members are given second chances, then it's not really a ban, is it? It's just a warning minus privileges. Therefore, if you're going to have a system like this, you need to add an adjective like 'temporary' before the word 'ban' (or even replace the word 'ban' altogether) in order to more accurately describe the punishment.

this sucks. I mean, I guess it's a try, but you don't have to be pussies mods. A banning should be longer than a week for starters, and secondly there's still ambiguity and subjectivity in a member being back and "supportive" for a "significant amount of time". I feel like I'm always unsure about what this site is trying to do. there's little to no quality control of posts except for what's downright criminal but then there are still policies like this one that are trying to do something but are still totally powerless.

David stated the 7 day thing well over a year ago now. Everyone thought it was a crock of shite but what can you do. We've been going by it for roughly two years, so for you to say it's the most prepostorous thing ever is a pretty bad reflection on yourself really, seeing as the system's been working that way without you noticing for years.

We just take the stuff we've been ordered on and work around that to find something that's best on the whole. And to be honest, I think the team has done a pretty good job. You'd be amazed at how hard it is to get such an argumentative group of people to agree on anything.

Also, although we have long followed the 7-day-rule, it hasn't (to my knowledge) been officially listed anywhere. At least now members are fully aware (or should be) of that rule and won't be surprised when we follow it.

And we do not have to give members second chances. If we think that a member is too dangerous to be allowed back, then we won't let them back.
