Okay, I'll just go through the background of this for those who don't know. Primark is a shop in the UK that is know for its seriously cheap prices. There was due to be a program shown on channel 4 a last night "exposing" the sweatshop conditions that are prevalent in China. This prompted a guy I know to create a facebook group (because that's all the rage) informing everyone what's happening and asking us to not shop at Primark. This is what I put:
Josh if you actually look at those pictures they are in sanitary conditions, they're wearing hairnets, they have space, they have light. Especially with China's ageing population (due to their one child policy) its necessary for people to earn as much money as they can to support those who can no longer work. Obviously if they are working on a self sufficient farm in rural areas they are not contributing any money to the economy and therefore those who cannot provide for themselves loose out on vital resources such as healthcare. Yes, these sweatshops are not ideal. But banning them, closing them all down would actually harm many more people than it would help. And actually to be quite honest I think Primark is actually probably the LEAST exploiting shop on the high street. The only reason that Primark is often targeted is because it sells its clothes at such a low price. Primark clothes are made in exactly the same place that New Look, Monsoon, Nike etc are made but they are only focusing on Primark because of the quality and how much they sell their items for, because primark sell them for the price they are bought, whereas other companies sell their products in exactly the same conditions for nearly three times as more. I know people who refuse to shop in Primark because it is "unethical". Every single shop on the high street except for those that exclusively stock fair trade clothes are probably far more unethical. They make a far higher profit than Primark would on a similar outfit.
I was wondering what your thoughts on the matter are. Particularly about other shops being worse as they make more of a profit. Thank you.

If you want to alleviate poverty, buy more sweatshop products.
