After doing loads of research a couple of years ago I forked out for KAV and Outpost as, in my research these two products sounded like the best AV and firewall available. What I didn't realise at the time was that they didn't play well together and required far more time to harmonise than I was prepared to spend.

I have just gone for a complete reinstall of XP and I'm starting afresh, and this time, I'm going free-free-free.

I have currently opted for:

AVG  Antivirus, which seems fairly unobtrusive and has good reviews. I may be wrong but I think it also incorporates Ewido now.

Online Armor Firewall. I love the simple GUI - it seems simple enough for me to understand! Not like Outpost which I just couldn't get on with.

Spyware Terminator - seems to do a good quiet job

Firefox Web browser - IE is painful after using FF

Noscript  - I like it but my girlfriend gets fed up of manually allowing or forbiding bits and pieces. A set of filters like those available for Adblock for the most common sites would be good...

Sandboxie  - a new program for me. I love it - like all my favourite solutions it seems like a simple and comprehensive solution.

I haven't had any compatibility problems at yet using these all in conjunction.

I was wondering if anyone had any other recommendations or preferable combinations.

AVG and Firefox ftw.

Unless I'm using my Mac, which doesn't need anything. :P

That's a pretty good list.
I always used Ad-Aware and Spybot S&D
Whatever spyware one mightn't pick up, the other probably would.

Sygate Personal Firewall seems to work well with AVG too.

i have a similar setup to yours.
-avg anti-v
-mozilla ff
-avg anti-s
-lavasoft ad-aware (better to be safe than sorry)
-comodo firewall home (free edition)
aside from comodo's vista-esque nags about install programs, i find everything to work more efficiently without clashing.
