So this has been a problem that has puzzled many people. I will explain the situation and then you dear LW users have to respond. I will later explain the full solution, but first, the question:

Suppose an airplane is placed on a conveyor belt travelling at a speed that will allow it to take off. However the conveyor belt is on in the opposite direction, so that the speed of the conveyor belt equals the speed of the airplane. Will the airplane take off?

Yes, if the airplane is going fast enough then it would be able to lift off the ground.  It's the same idea as driving a car, the faster you go the less traction you have, so the further from the ground you get.  Even though with cars its a minuscule amount of distance from the ground

I don't think I've seen it on LW myself, to be honest. I wanted to see the responses though. We get so many other reposts daily (such as sex, age, fav colour, etc) that it doesn't really matter.

Eh, I'm sure I've seen it a couple of times. Ah well, not important.

In answer to the question, yes.

Its airspeed will always be zero, it can not achieve enough lift to maintain lift off.  It may leave the ground temporarily, for a few moments, but it will likely return when it isn't able to keep the lift.

Depends how fast you can make the conveyor go. And your explanation of the problem isn't correct with the answer you're going to give.

Care to go into more detail?

But the answer is yes.

I posted it earlier here. Since the airplane do not acquire forward momentum by friction against the ground, but by its motors, the answer is obviously yes.
