I only performed in musicals at my high school but each time I did the casting was pretty fair. My sophomore year we did Grease; I was new to the school and barely knew the choral director or the theatre sponsor but because I auditioned well and have plenty of vocal experience I was cast as Rizzo. There were several seniors who may have been considered "favorites" but I was better suited for the role than they were so I got it. My senior year we did You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown and I played Lucy. Vocally I probably should have been cast as Sally because, although I'm a mezzo, I have a fairly large range and can sing soprano roles and the two girls who were double-cast as Sally were both definitely altos. But in the show Sally's only high parts are during group numbers or while she is offstage and I ended up singing all those parts myself. So the casting was definitely done more by character than by vocal range, but everything turned out well and there was no drama (ha) involved.
