I wasn't really sure where to put this topic, but I thought I'd stick it here.
Anyway, I recently watched a documentary about the Avian flu and I was wondering what everyone else thought. Would you consider the Avian Influenza to be an inevitable pandemic? One that will happen withint the next year? Or maybe in the next ten years...??
And what about wearing those masks - would stockpiling them for when the avian flu strikes be a gamble? I heard they have a shelf life of about three years.
What if the avian flu has actually spread to humans in the third world countries, but we just don't know it yet?
Who else is freaked out by the whole concept of this?
And if the anti-virus was distributed, who do you think should has the right to it? People of the younger generation, because their immune system makes the avian flu worse for them, or older people?  Who WATCHED the documentary?

It's a mutated form of [insert random scientific name here]. It's genetically mutated in such a way that when breathed in, it takes a hold of your body cells and hijacks it. Then it reproduces and takes over your whole body. There was also something about how it causes the good immune systems to produce too much of a chemical. I seriously can't remember, but it is very scary. And it destroys the tissues in your lungs and eventually your lungs fill up with blood and you drown in it.
Google it. I probably just gave a very bad and inaccurate summary of what happens. I do remember reading up on all the facts, but I can't remember right now.

Never seen that documentary, but I'd assume it's likely the avian flu is going to adapt to humans soon. But I think with scientists anticipating it, a cure would be out pretty quick, so not too many should die from it, if any.

What about a course of action? Did you see the part about that guy who stockpiled his water?

They're already got a cure - it's an antivirus called Tammyflu or something like that. But apparently it causes psychosis or something - seven of the people taking tammyflu commit suicide. Another thing is, scientists have anticipated that hospitals will not be able to cater for the amount of people who may/may not fall sick, and that they wono't be able to produce enough of the anti virus. Perhaps I will simply avoid chickens. :P

TamiFlu, you mean. And I think it ended up not working that well, read the Wikipedia article on it.
Yes.

Bird flu. H5N1. Oh, how many people I've told about this, and they all wave it away, "oh go away, we don't care, we don't want to worry about it..." but when it comes, they're going to wish they thought more about it. Because you're right. It's scary, and I think it's entirely possible for it to mutate into a human -> human contact transferable virus capable of wiping out... oh, maybe a billion people? Not that I'm complaining.

Because I reckon that nature does this sort of thing every now and again to balance everything out... we're far too overpopulated, and after the Spanish flu of 1918, we're overdue for another pandemic. Time to cut down the numbers again, shake everything up and see what settles.

Yes, that's the one. I'm quite uneducated in this... but it was rather disturbing. And what about that strange paralysis that struck people five years later after the spanish flu?
YES, H5N1! That's the one I was talking about, lol. Everyone I'VE spoken to about it don't care. They think that science will be able to solve it all, but the sheer number of people who will be needing help is just daunting and not physically possible.
:(
I dunno. I wish I had the brains to be a scientist and start helping right now, but heck, I'm only in middleschool.

Dude! Make it something to live for! Study medicine, or chemistry, and stun us all with a vaccine that can be mass-produced to spare as many lives as possible. The Tami-Flu isn't going to work all the time, and there isn't enough of it anyway. And the creators of it own the monopoly on it, so no one can replicate it either.
We need an open-source version of the patch to save humanity. :)

We do indeed :P
I am hoping to get into something good. I hate sitting around listening to bad news and feeling that I can't do anything because I'm still in school. Heh.
Why isn't this a really big issue? I mean, with SARS, everyone was worried and talking about it, but Avian flu has been a threat for so long, but no one cares.

The 20th century saw numerous pandemics, among others, in 1918 (H1N1), 1957 (H2N2) and 1968 (H3N2). It is a question of when.

SARS could spread from human to human.  As of yet, H5N1 cannot.  That is why there isn't hysteria over it.
