Linux is not bad and once you get used to it, its not hard to use either.

Also, its free or much cheaper than windows,, which is even better. Getting windows programs to run on it can be problematic however.

Yes. You can try linux ....... for FREE! Pick a distro such as debian(I use) knoppix (great for begginers who just want to play around while still using windows) or mandrake (very good user interface).

Just download the ISO you would like. PM me if you have trouble navagating the ftp files. And burn them to a cd. Be sure to burn them as an ISO.

If you have dial up you might want to get a friend with dsl/cable/t1 to download them for you and save you the hours of waiting.

As for programs on linux that run on windows, there are two applications. Wine and wineX. Wine is free, but I'm not sure about wineX. I think there is a small charge. WineX is mostly for use in games.

Linux is different then windows. Different document structure and makes use of the terminal (command prompt). But is easy to learn. You will have to read a lot to understand, or take a course at your community college.

What do you plan on using it for?

Everyone just assumes that 'oh linux sucks.'  You should ask them how long they have actually sat down and tried to learn how to use it.
It's not like windows, you cannot just sit down and figure out what you are doing, you will need to read and go by trial and error on how to do things.

Linux is a system that involves time.  But out of time comes   Linux was developed to be secure and provide the user with freedom, and choice.  It was not developed just to be easy to use.  With ease of use, comes security problems.  If you want an easier to use type to start, use Mandrake.  Don't listen to your bf, he probably never even heard of it.  Most computer "geeks" are just gamers, in that, they only know how to play games.  Trust me, I have a lot of schoolmates who are meet that description perfectly, yet they consider themselves gods with computers.  Yet I give them a computer with no harddrive, and they aren't able to figure out why it's not booting up.
