Well, I know a lot of us like to give out helpful links to people who make ehelp requests or posts in the forums. I often find myself giving out the same pages, so why don't we make a list of the best sites we've found? I keep some of these links (along with a PM I send to my novices) in my notepad. This is a list of some of the pages I’ve found useful. I’ll add other people’s as they post, so we can have a complete list.

In general

  • The TDEI sticky: suicide, self harm, depression, therapy, bullying, insecurity
  • Reach out: alcohol/drugs, depression/mental health, eating disorders, family, friends, relationships, illness and health, grief, independence, safety/violence, sex, pregnancy and sexuality, communication and self esteem
  • Cool Nurse - lots and lots and LOTS of stuff here.
  • Livewire Emergency Help: scroll down for sexuality and puberty, health, drugs and substance abuse, mental health, violence and abuse, rape,  age of consent, hotlines

Cutting and self harm

Sleep

Depression, anxiety and stress

Friends and relationships

Sex and contraception

Shyness and insecurity

Eating disorders

Studying and concentration

I have also found this to be useful, posted by a man who had been having trouble with his wife's illness (schizophrenia): 'She (his therapist) told me to let go of my wife that there was nothing I could do if she didn,t want to help herself.Having been told that by someone who knows what they are talking about has given me a lot of peace of mind.'.

Oh, what a catch.

This is a great idea for a thread, I'm sure it'll be really useful.

Anyway, I haven't been a support leader for very long, but these are the pages I have bookmarked so far:

WikiHow how to stop cutting yourself -- it's different from yours, surprisingly

A page on the effects of Rape Trauma Syndrome

A page on teen depression

Tips to get rid of anxiety and stress

When and how to apologize

TeensHealth: Getting over a breakup

That's all I've got now, but it's a growing collection.

I never ever [mostly] use links when helping someone.

The only one I have used is for the Morning After Pill as I found it extremely useful when I went through that.

I caution against relying on links to answer eHelps but they can be good for supplemental advice.  When using a link, make sure that it is 100% relevant to the topic, not just something that seems like you are throwing in there to make your reply seem more well-rounded or complete because it has a link.

A lot of the links in the TDEI FAQ (http://www.golivewire.com/forums/peer-tatne-support-a.html) are really great...I know the Friends' Guide to Self-Harm which helps Non-SIers understand SI is useful for eHelps of that subject.

The only one that I tend to use at all semi-frequently is

http://www.emergencybirthcontrol.org/FAQ_home.htm (It's about Plan B)

Other than that, normally I ask.com for websites at the moment, because I'll usually be looking for something specific.

Alright, I have a couple but not all that many. The last time I checked, they hadn't been listed already. Also, I've included the links from Keren's I Am Me. group.

Suicide and depression:
Read before you commit suicide
Talking to people who self harm

Anger management:
Anger management
...more anger management
Control your anger

[from Keren's group:]
Love yourself as a teen girl
First and foremost: You gotta love yourself!
Ten steps to self confidence
Improve your self esteem

And that's about it. I'll be sure to add on some more links later on.

It would be handy if there was some kind of support leader wiki, where we can all contribute resources that can help us in our job :)
