I have been looking around to try and find a way to add copy protection to some of the programs I have made, eg serial numbers etc however the only programs I have found that can do this must be paid for. Does anyone know of any free software which can add this protection or will I have to code the function in manually myself?

Well to be honest made there is no need. Unless you're going to be selling these programs, not letting them be used freely is only selfish.

Not that people will actually want to use the programs anyway, no offence.

Yeah its called get a hex editor and add the copyright watermark from the exe by hand which requires you to know exactly what your looking for because if you make a mistake your fucked, and most hex editors are free, and no i won't tell you what to add nor how to use the editor so don't ask, because its fucking complex.

Basically you just want to use Hex to add a 'watermark' to your work

Haha, I remember when I used to pay for software, what a fool I was back then.  I was just oblivious.

I'm sure you can find this software that "costs money" free somewhere.

It's only Bandwidth that costs money.

Right, because the software engineers who make the software don't need to eat and pay their mortgages.

Did i say anywhere I would charge for the software? No..

And in reply to LW Heroin Shotter, in my opinion, I made the programs, its up to me how I use them. And you have absolutely no idea about my level of programming ability, it might be really bad, it might be really good, but you cant exactly assume now can you?

As for the Hex watermark, thats a good idea, I never thought of that :D cheers.

If you are not going to sell them, why do you want to add DRM to them?

Any DRM scheme is essentially paper thin anyway, even the professionally made ones are now broken, in the end, you just have to trust your users to be honest, if you intend to sell it

If you intend to give it away for free, you should open source it so that others can work on it too and so that they can see that it is not harmful to their computer. I cannot understand why small software developers release software for free and do not release the source code, or sell it for some low price. Generally I wont touch such software anyway, it may look interesting, but once I spot that it costs money or isn't open source, I go elsewhere.

They may intend to sell a future version at some point in time. As to the low price, maybe they just want to earn a little pocket change to buy books or go the movies every now and then? What's wrong with doing that?

I'm always willing to pay for good software written by motivated developers. If it saves me time, it's worth it. A lot of the open source stuff simply doesn't measure up for my needs.

i dont agree with the opinion that such software should always be open source, thats just giving your work away to the world so it no longer belongs to you. if its a program that isnt really appropriate for other users to build on, why release the source??
