Laptops are portable but fragile Once you buy a laptop you're stuck with one hard drive (which can be expanded--but not easily), limited RAM expansion and no video upgrades. If the LCD panel fails, you're done. Desktops are flexible and cheaper (a lot cheaper) and easier to repair, upgrade and protect. Nobody is going to tuck one under their arm and run.
An Laptop is a must. Most Colleges are already requiring that you take one.

Laptop.
Dorms are small so it's good to have the space saver... and it's REALLY convenient to be able to take your computer to class with you when you need/want to.
