Ok I asked my boyfriend this one.. He says it should definately be an AMD based turion with 2 Gb of ram,(the ram is for Vista compability) and ATLEAST pciexpress x200 graphics by ATI...with USB 2.0 and ([possibly Firewire also)... and a DVD burner...... ATI and AMD merged so their stuff works very well together.... InTel and Nvidia (chip and respective video) are much more expensive and CAN suffer from driver issues..... ALSO CHECK OUT THE POSSIBILITY OF A TABLET PC.... Just be careful they are not quite as durable as a laptop...and if the company you buy it (either a table or the laptop) from offers it "ruggedized" get it....my boyfriend has fixed my laptop a few times it few off the desk during a party..... and "ruggedizing" is just like shock absorbing... Also if finances are a concern buy a laptop with an AMD Duron chip and like a K-Twister video card and either erase Windows XP from the hard drive or Dual boot to Linux.... Linux is an alternative FREE operating system that works MUCH better then windows.... and today's versions are very much like windows... I don't know if I can post free links here or not but one distribution is Mandrake, one is Suse, and Knoppix..... BTW Knoppix offers a Run from the DVD or CD and never touches the hard drive if you want to just check it out.....and best of all it is free and does NOT support Micro$oft.... If Micro$soft programed windows better we would not need so much ram or such large hard drive and just for a second think of the impact of throwing out a computer every 4 years.... just because the leader in software dosen't care how much gets tossed into the landfills...

Go with an inexpensive laptop. Chances are you will want to replace it in about 3 years anyway. I spent too much on my laptop before my freshman year and have only used about a quarter of the hard drive space. If you have money to burn, go with a mac. they look cooler when you bring them to class.

It really depends. Alot of people never actually take their laptop to classes or around campus. It stays almost as stationary as a desktop. If you're like that, then get a desktop. They are a much better value for your money. Know of course that it entails leaving your computer in your dorm over breaks where you aren't there.

For college a laptop is key, really. I carry mine in my backpack all day, and my entire campus has Wi-Fi access so I can go online anywhere.
