All of this comes down to one thing - it has been proven time and time again that the easier they make it for civilians to arm themselves the lower the rate of violent crime goes in that area.

Here in the Detroit area they recently (about 5 years ago) lowered the restrictions on the rights of citizens to carry handguns, making it easier to get a CCW. In the last 5 years violent crime has gone down, despite the economic situation getting worse and worse here every year. Normally crime goes up when the economy gets worse.

Draw your own conclusions.

BTW, the same can be shown statistically in every area where gun restrictions have been eased.

Criminals will always have guns, no matter what the laws are (duh - they're criminals, they don't follow the laws). It's up to you if you want to be able to protect yourself from the criminals that do have guns.

I think we should allow hunting rifles and things like that but there is absolutely no reason for a civilian to have an assault rifle (and little reason for them to have a handgun). What is an ASSAULT rifle used for? Gee I wonder... how about ASSAULT!? Everyone should have to have a permit for whatever guns they own as well; only police and military personnel should be able to handle assault rifles. There's very little reason any civilian needs a handgun other than to shoot other people with.
