I love this, but I have one grammatical argument.

The pronoun they is hotly debated on whether or not it may be used for a gender-neutral pronoun. Something that is as such seems a bit strange to be in the guidelines. I believe that Harvard teaches that it may be used as both singular and plural, even if it wasn't originally so.

Linguistic evolution is the cause, and it may be similar to insisting upon the differences of "thou" and "ye."

"They" is plural neutral. "E" is singular neutral. Use it.

My objections to this policy:-

1) Current "Intellectuals" should be re-tested -- and all those that fail, demoted.

2) This is a forum, and therefore I think it is grossly unfair (and inacurate) to place such emphaisis on grammer/spelling, --seeing as, nobody uses it correctly on LW in the first place.

also;
*it is VERY unfair on non-native english speakers.

* say it with me, "ethnocentralism"

*Will I be marked down for spelling "color", "colour" ? or do you plan on marking both "American English" and "English" seperatly?

In that case, what about the cannadians?, and what about the less obvious examples?

see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_and_British_English_differences

3)
Mods...you're marking these things -- so lets see how good YOUR GRAMMER IS?

"Pittsburgh are the champions"
"Pittsburgh is the champion"

comeon wizzkids, which one of these is grammatically incorrect?

4) The is extra work of mods...

This time I feel, would be better spent actually, "moderating" [GASP!]

Okay. A forum where you're forced to use good grammar is a good idea. Can we agree on this? Well, its rather hard to have to read EVERY POST to make sure that everyone is speaking in an intelligent manner. So, we filter out the idiots by forcing them to show that they can speak coherently. We aren't outing non-native english speakers, it just so happens that if they can't post coherently in English, then they can't post in this forum.

How can one have an intellectual arguement in terms such as this?

"der iz no such thang az n unselfesh achon. ppl r dicks"

No, I would not mark off for using British English.  I use British English in my typing a lot, myself.

If you are referring to a team, such as "The Pittsburgh Stealers" it would be "are the champions."  If Pittsburgh itself won an award, such as "Cleanest City" it would be "is the champion"

It does not take that much time to grade an intellectual test, and we have many duties that are not directly related to moderating the forum posts.

I do not grade the grammar of the tests with the same stringency as an English teacher would, so the ethnocentricity thing is not that big of an issue, though a basic ability to type properly is important and saying that we are looking for such allows us to consider grammar.

1) both Pittsburgh are/is....are/is gramatically correct, One is american english, the other british english, see wiki.

so, this means a mod may have incorrectly marked someones paper.

2) I still think grammar and spelling are marking the wrong thing.

--its a forum, and as such, you will find plenty of errors in my posts, does this mean i shouldn't be an intellectual.

3). I think the best possible system would be peer review....

A mod looks/reads a couple of their posts in thier history and decides if they reach a "quality quota"....

And I don't see why/how this would be much of a problem to implement either.

...if I want to be a support leader, I have to link 10 supportive posts....

why the hell don't we do the same, if not similiar system for intellectuals?

I'm not going to go to the effort to compose a silly paragraph for someone to read and evaluate.  If you can't make a judgment based on posts made in the various forums, then I'm not going to exert the effort.

I agree with those who've suggested this is a ridiculous concept.

It wouldn't be half-bad if the intel forum was half good anyway.....

if all Intel's were demoted, 90% couldn't be fucked to re-apply with stupid essays.

Oh you guys and your "intellectual test"

Having a 10 question multiple choice test and a rant about bout why one should be considered intelligent is bizarre.  I mean, who are the people of "LiveWire" to say who is smart and who isn't.

Whatever. I'm mostly angry because I read the note about the writing portion after I took the test, and my response was only a few sentences.

Have you ever pondered about why one must prove their intellectual level to those that cannot point out their sentence fragments?
